Learn one Chinese Character a day - 渔 | 漁

Since we just learnt 鱼, today we examine a new character related to it - 渔. What does it mean?

we already know that  means water or river. Combination of Water / River and 鱼 can possibly have following meanings:
a. fish inside water;
b. fish outside water.

Fish inside water does not have any special context. However fish outside water does, especially if it is caught out of water by people.

Let us get more hints from its ancient scripts. below is the evolution history of 渔 (image taken from http://vividict.com/):
evolution history of 渔 | 漁
As we can see from its Oracle script , it is the drawing of , which is a hand () holding a fishing rod (), to catch fish (), like a Chinese painting below:
angling

While its another Oracle script is a drawing of hands casting nets () to catch fish ().

Another Oracle script is drawing of fish () outside river (), which is eventually adopted by Seal script  with river moved to left hand side of fish.  is then evolved into the modern form - 渔 | 漁.

So 渔 | 漁 means fishing. For example: 渔夫.

And catching fish means obtaining some benefits, 渔 | 漁 is also used to mean obtain or get as a verb. For example 渔利. Since fishing is to catch fish by force and is against the will of fish, when 渔 | 漁 is used as verb, it is a kind of derogatory term, which contains such hiding meaning of "by force and against the will of other people".

That is all for 渔 | 漁, let us enjoy a Chinese calligraphy with it inside:

Learn one Chinese Character a day - 鱼 | 魚

Today we continue our learning journey to another Pictograph Chinese character - 鱼, whose traditional version is 魚.

It is kind of hard to guess the meaning with its current form: 鱼 | 魚. However once you see its Oracle script and Bronze script, you will definitely know what it means.

Here it is: Oracle script of 鱼 is, and its Bronze script is . Is not it actually a stick figure of fish, as shown below?
fish commonly seen in China

To know how it evolves from to its modern form - 鱼, we need to examine its ancient scripts, as shown below: ( which is taken from: http://vividict.com)
Evolution history of 鱼
We can see that its Seal script  is still containing the most characteristics of 鱼. Then it is deformed into during Clerical script era, which became pretty much the same as what we write today as Traditional character: 魚.

So 鱼 originally means freshwater fish that is commonly seen in China. for example: 鲫鱼.

Then it is eventually used to mean most species who lives in water and has the shape of a fish, too. For example: 鲸鱼.

That is all for today, it is now time to enjoy a Chinese calligraphy with 鱼 inside:

Learn one Chinese Character a day - 燕

Our character today 燕 is another pictograph Chinese character related to bird. Its Oracle script is  and one of its Seal script is . Could you guess which kind of bird it is?

It is a bird which can be commonly seen in China and lives closely together with people. Looking at its tail, Chinese ancestors did emphasise its special characteristics comparing to other birds: the bird with a forked tail!

Now you should tell which bird it is - swallow, as shown in below Chinese painting:
燕子
Let us examine its evolution history to see how it changes along the time. (Image taken from: http://vividict.com/)
evolution history of 燕
We can see that it was simplified a lot during Clerical script era: , which is quite close to what we write today. If we look closely again at its modern form - 燕, it is still kind of preserving some sort of the characteristics of a bird.

Now let us enjoy a Chinese calligraphy with 燕 inside:

Learn one Chinese Character a day - 鸣 | 鳴

Our character today is also related to 鸟, with an extra 口 added to create the combination: 鸣, whose Traditional version is 鳴.

What does 鸣 | 鳴 mean? We know that 鸟 is already the complete drawing of a bird. So 口 added should be used to emphasise the beak of 鸟. What the beak of a bird can do? Two major functions: "eat food" and "make sounds". Which one do you think it should be?

From we human being point of view, creating a dedicated character to represent the idea of a bird eating food does not make much sense, for that is not something special to a bird.

However many birds can sing melodiously which amuses people. That is something specially related to bird. Then it makes sense for Chinese ancestors to create 鸣 to represent such a special characteristic of 鸟 only. Let us listen to nice 鸣 of a certain bird below:

Yes, 鸣 means singing of a bird. for example : 鸟鸣

And it is eventually used to represent any nice, crisp and loud sounds like singing of bird. for example: 蛙鸣, 警钟长鸣.

Since birds sing to communicate with each other, 鸣 is then also used to mean "express someone's idea, thoughts or complains loudly", for example 百家争鸣, 鸣冤.

Now we know the meaning of 鸣 | 鳴. It is still worthy of going through its evolution history (image take from: http://vividict.com) as shown below:

Learn one Chinese Character a day - 乌 | 烏

Today our character 乌 looks very similar to what we just learnt 鸟.  And its Traditional version 烏 to that of 鸟 - 鳥. Check carefully their differences.

Because of their similarity, 乌 must be something related to bird. to refresh your memory of 鸟, please go to https://xiongzou.blogspot.sg/2017/12/learn-one-chinese-character-day_18.html to review its ancient scripts.

the which is missing in 乌, comparing to 鸟, refers to the eyes of a bird. So what does 乌 mean here? There are two possibilities:
a. the bird without eyes;
b. certain bird, whose eye is kind of invisible.

If you still remember what we learnt of character 西 (https://xiongzou.blogspot.sg/2015/12/learn-one-chinese-character-day_15.html), you know the existence of a black bird called 金乌, which Chinese ancestors believed to carry Sun around the world in sky.
金乌

Yes 乌 is created specifically to represent such a black bird, with its black eyes not visible, as shown below. It is amazing that the Chinese ancestors so intelligent and creative in inventing all kinds of Chinese characters, isn‘t it?
乌鸦 - crow
From the creation of character 乌, it does demonstrate a very important philosophy of Chinese that "Less is more"!

Here is the evolution history of 乌 | 烏: (image taken from: http://vividict.com)
evolution history of 乌 | 烏

Oracle script of 乌 is missing. While its Bronze script is just drawing of another type of bird. Starting from Seal scripts of 乌 (which is ) and that of 鸟 (which is ) , we can see clearly the idea of "not drawing the eyes of 乌".

So 乌 is specifically created to mean crow. For example:
As time passes, 乌 is also used to mean colour black as well. For example:
And since 乌, comparing to 鸟, has no eyes, 乌 carries the meaning of no / not as well. For example 子虚

that is all for 乌 | 烏, let us enjoy a Chinese calligraphy to end our lesson today:

Learn one Chinese Character a day - 鸟 | 鳥

Today we are going to check another Pictogram character - 鸟, whose traditional version is 鳥.

Once you know the meaning of 鸟 | 鳥, you will like its traditional version 鳥 more. 鳥 is a closer drawing of the object it represents.

Let us examine its revolution history as shown below : (image taken from http://vividict.com)
evolution history of 鸟 | 鳥

Its Oracle script is a drawing more than a proper character. I assume you would already know what , or  or  refers to?

Starting from Oracle script, to Bronze script, then Seal script, till its current modern form,  鳥 inherits most of its ancient scripts, while 鸟 is simplified too much.

鸟 | 鳥 is another example which explains why we appreciate our traditional version 鳥 more than its simplified counter party - 鸟.

yes, 鸟 | 鳥 means bird. And  is indeed a vivid drawing of a singing bird.

Learn one Chinese Character a day - 驭 | 馭

From today onwards, we start to pick up some of the low hanging fruits in Chinese character vocabulary . Our character today is 驭, whose Traditional version is 馭.

We have already learnt the character 马 is a drawing of horse, and original meaning of 又 is hand.

So what is the meaning of 驭 then? A natural guess would be "use hand (又) to control a horse (马)". As shown in below the pictures:

A recent photo:
驭马
 And a ancient Chinese drawing:
驭马图
We can double confirm our guessing with its evolution history: (image taken from:http://vividict.com)
evolution history of 驭 | 馭
Looking at its Bronze Script , we can see that it is composed of (马) and  is drawing of "a hand holding something". Since it is related to 马, that something must be horsewhip. Below is a modern art which uses metal to represent .

When it came to Seal Script,  is simplified to , with its  simplified to . Amazingly the simplified Seal Script presents the meaning of  even better.

驭 | 馭 is thus the continual version of .

驭 | 馭 means "use hand to control a horse", for example 驾驭

For 驭 | 馭 has the meaning of control, it is then eventually used to mean "to control, to manage, to rule, or to supervise". for example: 统驭, 以简驭繁
